Consumer-ism

Consumer-ism here
Consumer-ism there
Consumer-ism everywhere
It travels by land,
Travels by sea,
Flies through the air!

Consume it preaches
Consume it teaches
With long taloned
Fingers it reaches
To hold, enfold
Everyone, us all
Until the last remnant
Finally is sold

Taught by all advertisers
Those oh so clever despisers
Of thrift, economy
The idea that you do not
Have to own each
& every thing you see!

And so this culture rolls on
Grinding out the same old song
BUY, SPEND, CONSUME
We continue to follow,
Dance to their mesmerizing
But false, lying tunes,

That large volumes of things
Bring us true joy
Only more and more toys
Will satisfy
But still life hurts, disappoints
And we softly cry
Knowing somewhere inside
Something is wrong

What if,
Instead of all the preaching
Of material wealth
(it is a form of belief)
We as a people began to teach
Not to be good consumers
Of mere physical things
But let our voices ring, sing
good sellers, tellers of
Jesus of Nazareth

The Living Christ
I will say it twice, even thrice
God is the center of your being
Only in HIM is life, true seeing
Of love, joy, deepest peace
It is of HIM we should happily teach
And only, only of HIM consume!!

Chokehold

Chokehold

It has me by the throat
It sneers then gloats
Slithers & slides
Tightening its grip
Around my neck,
My heart,
This Chokehold

Teaching, always reaching
To infect, detect
My weaknesses
It infers, deters
Pulls, cajoles
Will it never let go?

No, it will not.
If I wish this to stop,
I must do it myself
Stop this lusting,
Discontinue the trusting
In the consuming of
Mere things, junk

How many material
Possessions
Does it take to make
One happy?
While others starve
Do I really have to be
At the heart
Of the world’s party?

So I am trying to let go
Guard my only soul
Feed it
As I try to resist
Materialism’s temptation
And shun the world’s
Blasting horns.

Stuff!

garbagegirlpoem

Materialism has its up and downs. It’s not always as great as it’s cracked up to be. It can be corrupting for more than one thing(earth, human body and soul).

Stuff
Plastic, metal, glass
Concrete poured
On a valuable earth
Struggling to survive.

Fast cars, faster planes,
Light-speed computers,
Stuff
Up to our necks.

Or maybe
Up to our hearts,
Lusting, lusting

We’re told we need
NEED
Stuff, stuff, stuff
To survive.

Garbage piles heaped,
All our stuff
Discarded, thrown away,
Destroyed forever
So we can have
More Stuff.

Physical we are for
Now
But more spirit
For the later

Stuff, stuff, stuff
Helps not with
The later of a
Different place

Another world which
Does not care
Endlessly about all our
Stuff.
